I have a 1988 BB wbwl with 8v92 DDEC while riding along at 62- 65 mph
1700rpm my check engine light stop engine lights come on along with
buzzer. All guages are in operating order and are in their normal
ranges. Sometimes when I turn on the aux fan the light and buzzer go
off. recently the coach decides that it needs a break and forces me to
stop (engine stopping) momentarly turn key off wait not more than five
minutes the start the coach and drive off. On a 265 mile trip this
happen two to three times......

Any Ideas??

Check the oil pressure sending unit just to the left of your a/c
compressore. See if the wire is shorting out or the unit is damaged.
I had one that had been cut by a loose a/c belt and allowed water to
get in to the top and short the unit.

Have you checked your engine flash codes? Do that by pressing the
check engine button and record the flashes, then get back on line and
tell us what you see. I can then give you a better diagnosis.

By the way, you do not have to have the coach out to get this
information. It is stored there until cleared by a Detroit technician
with a reader/programmer.

Jim, Welcome to the loose connection club. We have the same coach and it was
doing the same thing. We even called the Detroit dealer out on a weekend to see
what was going on and when he got there I fired the 8V up and ran great. When I
got back home I had my detroit dealer look at it and they had to get out the old
diagnostic equipment to find that I had a loose connection on one bank. They
cleaned and made sure everything was tight and we have not had any further
problem.

I have alway had the check engine light come on going down hills but as soon as
I touch the fuel pedal it goes out. It does not leave a code and the dealer
thinks that this is a problem with the light system itself rather that the
engine.

The check engine light is usualy triggered by a minor event. Multiple
minor events create major problems. Even if it is just a sensor error,
repair or replace the sensor because you will not know if a "Check
engine signal" is additional trouble. Like mass air restriction could
make the fuel smoke and carbon out the sump oil. I paid $35.00 to have
codes read on a Truck just today, The tec was able to pinpoint the
reason and solution, money well spent. I wish the code reader was
onboard like my newer diesel skidsteer tractors. with fuel as it is
maybe a mobile mechanic is a cheaper route. be sure they have the
proper reader for your engine ser#

Since purchase my PT38, I've gone back and read all the past posts. I have
kept tips on different topics. Here is what I have read concerning the Check
Engine Light:
BTW, are the 50,000 posts accessible yet. I haven't been able to access
them.

pull a long hill, this has been constant for four years, The code say low
coolant
when the tank is full. I have been into William Detroit in Georgia and
Phoenix, Detroit diesel shops in North Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, and
more.
The suggestions and cures have ranged from poor ground, bad injectors, bad
sender, to duck tape over the lite. I now believe it must be a fault in the
computer or wiring or other magical places. But, if other 88 pt40 owners have
the
same problem it probably is a manufacturing flaw. If anyone finds a cure
please post it. 2) I also have a 88 PT40 WB with the exact symptoms, must be a
manufactured problem. 3) My 1988 PT40 does the same."

1991 8V92 DDEC II. "Check engine" light does not go out after 5 seconds
when ignition turned on ... tachometer inoperative. Engine runs fine
but speed restricted to 37 mph (computer I assume). Problem is
intermittent. After coach sits a few hours when the ignition switch is
turned on both the "stop engine" & "check engine" lights will go out
(normal sequence) & tach works & engine operation & speed are normal.
Then when switched off & re-started only the "check engine" light comes
on constantly ... "stop engine" light never comes on ... tach inop ...
speed restricted.

I am suspect of a ground problem but don't have a clue where to start
the search. I'm also suspect of the DDEC II unit but want it to be
something much more simple ($$$$).

All fluids normal, no noises, leaks, or performance issues when "check
engine" light is off ... but as you can imagine ... 37 mph is very
restrictive for most travels.

Wild guess: Is it cold and or wet at your location? Perhaps a
sensor on the Allison and or 8V92 needs cleaned/dried, and then di-
electric protected?

Another wild guess! Check the pins going into the DDEC, if not
covered or coated, possible moisture- shorting them, at times!
