Ok..Enough..We are all Birders Togather.........
I need some basic info on mufflers. Our old 6.5 Onan gave up the
ghost, So we had a Emerald 5.5 installed.
(still have the 6.5 for electrical parts)
Problem is they connected the new Onan to the old muffler. It works,
but has a loud "Bark" to it. Not too bad inside the coach, but I am
afraid that I may camp next to someone bigger than me!!
Now I need a lesson in muffler engeneering. I know a straight thru
like a glasspac won't work, for obvious reasons. Will a larger
muffler be quieter than a smaller one, other things being equal? In
other words, Will one from a (say) 120 cubic inch engine be noiser
than one fron a 250" engine.
I am sure other factors involved, but I would like the Generator as
quiet as possible,,,,

My exhaust experience is on gas engine cars - not diesels. If you
have enough room, a straight through muffler, with a second smaller
resonator is the quiet yet high flow way to go (on gas engines anyway,
I assume a diesel would be the same, but could be wrong).
The "bullet" muffler makes a good resonator if you have room for both
a muffler and resonator.

If inlet and outlet sizes are ok (Tom Warner says 4" inlet), then I
would select the largest body size available that will fit your
application, and have a local exhaust shop put it in place.

Jack,
This may depend on the total length of the exhaust pipe.
I had an Emerald 4.0 on my 5th wheel and the exhaust came out
of the generator on the curb side and had a straight exhuast
pipe with no muffler running the width of the trailer, exiting
out from under it on the street side.
This made the pipe almost 8 feet long.
That thing was whisper quiet. If your total exhaust length
is only a few feet, that might be the difference.
I can also tell you from working with car exhaust that the
further the muffler is from the engine, the better it works.
If you have an 8 foot exhuast that's noisy, find a Honda
muffler from a small Civic and put it at the end of the pipe.
That should make it quiet.
